Gladstone’s is back and we’re into it and far along with it.
Amazing Joy Buzzards didn’t have the support to continue, and never made any money but took up so much time. For me it was a passion, and I always begged Dan to finish the series, but now he’s married, with children, and has to make a living. So it’s impossible for me to ask or beg him to work for free on a book that no one read or supported.
The second volume was 75% completed but I don’t think it will ever come out.
Maybe some good news is that there is a ‘Lost Book’ that I did with a guest artist way back in 2005 and I’m going to release that digitally in sections starting this year once the colors and letters are wrapped.
Once it’s finished, I might try to get a work for hire budget from print, and do an Amazing Joy Buzzards A-Z(ed) book with guest teams doing a story from each country on a world tour and filling in the blanks for those lost adventures we hinted at and referenced in the books.
I think that would be fun, to have new books out, and different teams working on stories. I don’t think I want to return to that world after the ‘Lost Book’ because I’d rather work on something all new, and that was so long ago, that I’m not the same person, and don’t have that same energy or enthusiasm I had when working on it.
I got back to work on Fenrir this week and hope to have the first issue completed this weekend. (Art by Megaboy)
Here are some of the opening pages of script from ‘Fenrir: Space Devil’.
FENRIR: SPACE DEVIL
A chapter card with a huge stylized ‘1’, for Chapter One. Boye who is Fenrir’s Cat is at the top of the giant ‘1’, cleaning his fur.
PAGES 2 & 3 – DOUBLE SPLASH VIGNETTE PAGES
This is a double splash vignette page, that’s an introduction to Fenrir. He’s on the surface of an empty planet that has only rocks and craters on it. Fenrir stands alone looking up at all the stars in the cosmos. He has his back to us, his cape flows to the left. The camera is high up and far back, and he’s almost two inches tall on the right side of the page.
The left side of the page is the empty terrain of the planet’s surface.
Boye his familiar/and Cat Companion is to the right of Fenrir on the page, sitting on a rock, looking up at the stars with Fenrir. Boye is ever Fenrir’s faithful companion.
In the night sky we get the images of what Fenrir’s talking about in his voice over
There are spiders in the cosmos, spinning the webs to create the very fabric of the universe. Through the center of their individual webs, stars shine brightly held in place by the webs. Some threads are golden and magic.
Think of the cover to the children’s book ‘The Little Prince’ as the starting point for the composition, and build up from there.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 1: My name is Fenrir, and I am a Space Devil.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 2: Long, long ago, the universe was weaved by cosmic spiders, who spun magic threads into their tapestry.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 3: Through these threads, consciousness, thought, and magic energies rapidly flow.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 4: My kind are nicknamed ‘Space Devils’ because we’re in tune with the cosmic web.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 5: The universe whispers its secrets to my people. We pull energy from the cosmic ether, wield the power of the cosmos, and hold congress with ancient entities who come to our aid.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 6: What we do is seen by others as an aberration of nature, as witchcraft or sorcery, and because of this most hate and fear us.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 7: Hence our nickname‘Space Devils’.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 8: Personally, I just think they’re jealous because no one else can do what we do.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 9: Most of my people believe the name ‘Space Devil’ to be hateful, derogatory, and slanderous.
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 10: Myself?
FENRIR VOICE OVER CAPTION 11: I embrace the name and do my best to live up to it, by getting up to as much trouble as I possibly can.
PAGE 4 & 5
The same composition as the double splash page.
Fenrir now sits turned towards us in the same spot where he was on the previous double splash page, petting Boye his cat who purrs away.
The Cosmic Spiders have written ‘Fenrir: Space Devil’ in the stars above with their webbing almost connecting the constellations, much like the Spider from the ‘Charlotte’s Web’.
One Minute Movie Review:
I finished ‘her’ yesterday, as I start to watch all of the academy award contending films.
I didn’t really feel anything for the main characters problems, mostly because he has an awesome pad, and a job most people would kill for. His problems are so cliche and done to death in movies, that it’s impossible to care about him. There are people in the world with far, far worse problems and this guy isn’t starving, overcoming poverty, or in the middle of a war, and life is pretty comfortable for him.
What I really did like was that it was sci-fi, and taking on a theme speculatively. The film did a really good job of taking us through a ‘What if?’ scenario, that does seem completely plausible, given the direction that technology is heading. There aren’t a lot of films done like that lately, and I’d like to see more.
